In December 2021, Stronsay Development Trust purchased the Stronsay Hotel on behalf of the community, securing one of the island’s most important assets for long-term community benefit.
Following the purchase, the hotel was operated directly by the Trust, supported by a dedicated team of paid staff and committed volunteers. This community-led approach ensured the hotel continued to provide accommodation, hospitality, and an important social hub for island residents and visitors.
From January to October 2023, the hotel closed temporarily to allow for essential renovation and improvement works. These upgrades were undertaken to protect the building, enhance facilities, and support its long-term sustainability.
In October 2024, the Trust transitioned to a lease model, with the hotel now operated independently under lease agreement. Community input remains central, ensuring the building continues to serve Stronsay’s long-term economic and social interests.
The purchase and stewardship of the Stronsay Hotel reflects the Trust’s wider commitment to protecting key island assets, supporting local employment, strengthening tourism, and sustaining vibrant community life.
In November 2025, Stronsay Development Trust welcomed Penny Flaherty and Anton Flaherty as leaseholders of the Stronsay Hotel, marking a new chapter in the hotel’s continued operation under community ownership.
